Mid-Year Beauties Dominate Mecum Texas & The ’66 Corvette That Met Its Demise

Texas proved memorable for the Mid-Year Corvettes—though one never made it home. We have the Top 7 C2 sales & a sad side story

We are quickly approaching the end of Mecum’s 2025 auction season, with enthusiasts flocking to Dickies Arena, the Dallas/Fort Worth venue for the collector car auction’s third-to-last event of 2025. While we witnessed some great results for our beloved Corvette, none surpassed the combined effort of the second-generation models, also known in enthusiast circles as the Mid-Years. However, some of the limelight was overshadowed by one pristine 1966 Coupe that met its demise shortly after its new owner bid $126,500 for the honor of taking her home — more on that in a moment.

Just how did the second-generation Mid-Year Corvettes dominate? First, a 1963 Split Window Coupe flew past $400,000 to take top honors, but it doesn’t end there. Six of the top 10 sales were Mid-Years, and out of the top 25 largest hammer prices, 16 were C2 ‘Vettes.

If you look at our exclusive Mecum tracker below, you’ll notice that most 2025 inventory numbers are below 2024, including today’s Dallas auction. Last year, 148 Corvettes found their way to the Lone Star State, versus 129 for 2025. Another notable inventory reduction occurred at Mecum’s season opener, which offered 527 Corvettes in 2024 versus 477 for this year — a 9.5% reduction. That being said, sales percentages are up across many venues, notably the aforementioned season-opening Kissimmee extravaganza, which sold a remarkable 80% of those 477 ‘Vettes (compared to 72% in 2024). Here is the full tracker so you can have some fun with the comparisons.

The 1966 Coupe That Met Its Demise

We can’t recall the last time we’ve seen post-auction carnage like this. Details about the incident are limited, but a Reddit user named Zyncon suggested that a Mecum driver might have accidentally pressed the accelerator, causing the Willys restomod to collide with the Mid-Year. Remarkably, one of the car owners was nearby and had to witness the chaos unfold.

According to the same source, three individuals were hospitalized as a result of the collision, which also resulted in damage to a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am and a 2019 C7 Corvette ZR1. Our source for this story, CarScoops, reached out to Mecum for clarification on the situation, including the well-being of the injured parties and which insurance will be handling the costs. At this time, no follow-up report has been posted.
