Joe Raiti takes an in-depth look at a pristine 1965 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible, an iconic example of the second-generation C2 Corvette and a defining American sports car of the 1960s. Finished in a timeless white exterior with a contrasting red cabin, the car combines classic styling with one of the most desirable powertrains of its era: Chevrolet’s 396-cubic-inch L78 Turbo-Jet Big Block V8.

Rated at 425 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, the naturally aspirated V8 sends its power through a four-speed manual transmission, giving the lightweight Corvette a distinctly mechanical and engaging character. With a curb weight of roughly 3,400 pounds, the car was capable of 0–60 mph in approximately 5.3 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 13.7 seconds, impressive figures for the period.

The 1965 model year also holds particular engineering significance because it marked the first time the Corvette was equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. That upgrade represented a major advancement in braking performance and complemented the C2’s broader introduction of new engineering and technology.

Raiti also explores the Corvette’s period-correct details, from its hidden headlights, slim chrome bumpers, knockoff-style 15-inch wheels, and redline tires to its functional fender vents and distinctive Stingray bodywork. Inside, the minimalist cabin features manual controls, analog instrumentation, a teakwood steering wheel, and a four-speed shifter, reinforcing the car’s unmistakably analog character.

Behind the wheel, the 1965 Stingray delivers a raw driving experience defined by crisp manual-transmission shifts, a heavy clutch, manual steering, linear Big Block torque, and the unmistakable sound of a classic American V8. Although the convertible exhibits more chassis vibration than a coupe, Raiti emphasizes its engaging handling and mechanical purity.
