A radical reinterpretation of one of America’s most iconic sports cars, the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Split Window Coupe headed to auction at Mecum Auctions on May 16 is a singular engineering statement and rolling tribute to Corvette visionary Zora Arkus-Duntov.
Conceived as a one-of-one handcrafted build, this extraordinary machine transforms the legendary split-window Sting Ray into the mid-engine supercar Arkus-Duntov long envisioned decades before Chevrolet ultimately embraced the configuration in the modern Corvette C8.
Awarded the coveted GM Design Award at SEMA in 2007, the bespoke coupe blends classic Corvette DNA with advanced fabrication and contemporary supercar architecture. Its dramatically re-sculpted cab-forward body features sweeping aerodynamic lines, sculpted side intakes, and a striking exposed-engine presentation visible through the original split-window rear openings.
Perhaps most distinctive is the innovative “Suislide” articulating door system, which amplifies the car’s theatrical presence while showcasing the extensive craftsmanship beneath the bespoke Black finish.
Power comes from a twin-turbocharged Chevrolet LS-based V-8 derived from the famed Hot Rod Magazine Project Blueprint engine program. Paired with a custom-built Mendeola transaxle and controlled through an automatic transmission with Master Shift paddle controls, the drivetrain delivers exotic-level engineering wrapped in unmistakable Corvette styling.
The chassis was engineered from the ground up using a custom tube dual-ladder frame, Penske adjustable suspension, and massive Baer six-piston brakes with cross-drilled rotors. Inside, the cockpit balances race-inspired functionality with handcrafted luxury, featuring Cobra competition seats, a Full Crow harness system, leather-wrapped Sting Ray dashboard, AutoMeter instrumentation, air conditioning, and power windows.
