Corvette enthusiasts can recite the C4 ZR-1‘s particulars without prompting. Considerably fewer can account for the 1988 Corvette that ran 410.00 km/h (254.76 mph) around an Ohio test oval two full model years before the ZR-1 reached showrooms, then drove home to Connecticut with the air conditioning running.

Reeves Callaway had been circling that number for some time. Car and Driver’s 1987 top speed shootout, staged under the title “A Gathering of Eagles,” provided the venue, and a twin-turbocharged C4 nicknamed Top Gun provided 372.0 km/h (231.1 mph). Respectable company for a Corvette in 1987. Insufficient for a man who could see what the chassis still had in reserve.
