Welcome to this week’s edition of Corvette Community News, where we highlight some of the notable stories from our community that you may have missed. Thanks for joining us today–let’s dive in!
1) GM President Mark Reuss: “We’d never take [Corvette] out of Chevrolet…”
You’ve probably heard the rumors for years now, and we reported on the speculations previously. During that feature, it was mostly Car & Driver who was fueling the fire with rumors that the Corvette would become its own “subbrand.” And I often hear owners wishing for a more prestigious and upscale dealer experience, and removing the Corvette from the typical Chevrolet dealership experience would probably help.
Here are the bullet talking points from two years ago:
- The next move for GM with its valued Corvette nameplate will be to launch a Corvette subbrand.
- The Corvette “brand” will include a four-door “coupe” and a sporty high-performance crossover to partner with the upcoming two-seater Corvette EV.
- The new Corvette lineup will be positioned well above its rivals, such as a future trio of electric Mustangs.
Well, Chevrolet Corvette fans, you can rest easy for now! Here is the full quote from Mark Ruess, which was made in a recent YouTube video on Jay Leno’s Garage.
“We’d never take [Corvette] out of Chevrolet because the core of Chevrolet is offering people more than they thought for the money and doing it with fantastic design and performance… That’s what Corvette is.”
Here is the full video, and we’ve cued up the segment where Jay and Mark are discussing the specifics of the Corvette brand.
2) Our Community Now Has One Less C7 ZR1
Sure, it’s “just a car,” but enthusiasts and collectors across social media are understandably saddened since learning the fate of this beautiful 2019 Corvette ZR1. The rare one-year-only ZR1 was originally reported stolen from a collector in Grimsby, Ontario, on August 15 of this year, and as time passed, the worst was expected.
Here is the original police image from August.
Reported and believed to be only one of three C7 ZR1s in all of Canada, the worst-case scenario was discovered on a dirt road in Clearview Township, just outside of Barrie, Ontario. To add insult to injury, the owner lost what is now considered one of the most collectible modern Corvettes–we did an in-depth market analysis here.
In an email to CTV News, Niagara police said, “It has been secured for forensic examination… We will be working with the OPP over the course of the ongoing investigation.” CTV News also reports, “It is unknown if there are any suspects in the investigation.”
As we view the aftermath, let’s have a moment of silence for this lost piece of Corvette history. All photos are credited to Barrie.CTVNews.Ca.
