The L88 Corvette, produced from 1967 to 1969, was the ultimate performance model one could buy straight off the showroom floor. Although it was officially rated at 430 horsepower, it was believed to generate around 550 horsepower and required premium 103-octane fuel. Developed as a homologation model for racing in Can-Am, FIA, and NASCAR, it featured a 427-cubic-inch big-block V8 with forged internals and aluminum heads designed for racing.
Buyers also received heavy-duty components, such as J56 power-assisted brakes, an F41 suspension, and a G81 Positraction differential. The engine featured 12.5:1 compression, forged steel internals, and reinforced components, allowing the L88 to rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. Only twenty 1967 L88 Corvettes were produced, making it an incredibly rare and highly coveted model.
Crossing the Mecum auction block on May 17, this 1967 Corvette L88 features a striking Rally Red exterior and matching red interior—the only known L88 from that year in this unique red-on-red combination. The car retains its factory-style non-DOT tires and features a correctly restored L88 engine.
Its prestige is backed by multiple top-tier awards, including the NCRS Duntov Mark of Excellence, Bloomington Gold Certification in 1994 and 2014, and repeated appearances in the Bloomington Gold Special Collection. It also achieved NCRS Regional and National Top Flight honors with scores of 98.2 and 98.4, respectively, and received the NCRS Performance Verification award and Chip’s Choice at Corvettes at Carlisle.
Previously owned by Ray Norvell and later part of the Rare Wheels Collection, the car was reportedly raced early in its life before being restored by the Naber brothers. This L88, one of the rarest Corvettes, offers a unique opportunity for collectors.
