DragTimes returned to the strip for a head-to-head showdown, putting the Chevrolet Corvette C8 ZR1 coupe and convertible through their paces at Bradenton Motorsports Park. The goal was simple: find out whether the added weight and structural differences of the drop-top variant would impact real-world drag performance.
Both ZR1s were prepped under similar conditions, each running with a light fuel load and comparable setups. The convertible carries roughly an 88-pound weight penalty over the coupe, though carbon fiber wheels helped offset some of that difference by trimming rotational mass. Still, subtle distinctions remained—most notably, the coupe’s additional cooling vents, which could prove beneficial during repeated hard runs in hot conditions.
With both ZR1s staged, the runs delivered exactly what fans hoped for—tight, competitive racing. The coupe ultimately edged ahead, gaining roughly a car length advantage when factoring out reaction time discrepancies. The convertible held its own, staying remarkably close despite the slight weight disadvantage and fewer cooling aids.
