The Porsche and Corvette have always approached performance from different philosophical angles. Porsche favors compact sophistication and precise engineering, while Corvette historically leaned into raw displacement and brute force.
But with time—and the advent of the mid-engine C8 Corvette—the gap between their design philosophies has narrowed. Now, hybrid technology brings them even closer, though for both, it’s been added for performance rather than efficiency. In their recent video, Top Gear compares the C8 Corvette E-Ray against the new 992.2 GTS to see which one is more engaging and fun to drive.
At $118,000, the Corvette E-Ray is a bang-for-buck contender boasting 655 horsepower and 595 lb-ft of torque from a combination of its 6.2-liter V8 and an electric motor driving the front axle. It’s the first-ever all-wheel-drive Corvette and can even operate in front-wheel-drive electric-only “stealth mode.” Zero to 60 mph takes a claimed 2.5 seconds, and the top speed is 183 mph, despite its 3,891-pound curb weight.
The Porsche takes a different approach. Its mechanical all-wheel-drive system is augmented by a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six with an electric turbo and a hybrid motor integrated into the PDK gearbox. Total output is 478 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, with a 0–60 mph time of 3.0 seconds and a 194 mph top speed. It’s slightly lighter at 3,626 pounds and comes equipped with rear-wheel steering and lowered sport suspension.
