Chevrolet appears to be making a significant change to the Corvette lineup. According to sources cited by GM Authority, the C8 Corvette E-Ray is set to be retired and replaced by a new variant called the Corvette Grand Sport X for the 2027 model year, part of a broader shakeup that also introduces a standard Grand Sport model to the lineup.
Buyers Think the E-Ray Is Electric
The rename is likely part of a broader effort to better align the hybrid sports car within the C8 hierarchy, reducing potential confusion among buyers who may assume the E-Ray is fully electric rather than a hybrid. Industry chatter suggests the E-Ray may not be meeting its initial sales expectations, and one possible explanation centers on the model’s name.
The “E” prefix appears to be working against the car. Buyers scanning the Corvette lineup have reportedly been passing on the E-Ray under the assumption that it is a fully electric vehicle, when in reality it is a hybrid that pairs a 6.2L V8 with a front-mounted electric motor for all-wheel drive.
The Grand Sport Name Makes a Return

Under the new plan, the Corvette Grand Sport X would follow the same naming logic seen with the new Corvette ZR1X, making no outward reference to hybrid technology, an approach the GSX is expected to mirror as well.
On the performance front, the upgrade is substantial. The Grand Sport X is expected to produce around 720 horsepower, pairing the new LS6 V8 engine with a hybrid electric drivetrain and all-wheel-drive grip. That would be a meaningful jump over the current E-Ray’s combined output of 655 horsepower. The name change arrives alongside a wave of new C8 updates rolling out for the 2027 model year.
