FOR SALE: 1978 Chevrolet Corvette (C3) Anniversary Pace Car

Shows just 38 miles on the odometer

In 1978, Chevrolet celebrated the Corvette’s 25th anniversary by introducing an updated version of the third-generation model. This refresh included a distinctive fastback-style glass rear window, a redesigned cabin, and several commemorative editions — most notably a special Indianapolis 500 Pace Car replica.

For the first time in its history, the Corvette was selected as the official pace car for the 1978 Indianapolis 500, with race winner Jim Rathmann leading the field at the start. Chevrolet initially planned to build just 300 replicas for public sale, but overwhelming demand prompted the company to increase production to 6,502 units — effectively supplying one to every Chevrolet dealership nationwide.

Now listed on Collecting Cars, this particularly eye-catching 1978 Corvette C3 Indy 500 Pace Car replica is believed to have remarkably low mileage. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.

According to previous listings, the car remained with its original dealership for 22 years before being sold in 2000 with only 11 miles recorded. It later appeared in a 2004 estate auction showing just 28 miles. Today, the odometer reads 38 miles, which the seller claims is authentic.

Each replica wore a distinctive black and silver two-tone finish with red pinstriping, Indianapolis Speedway winged-wheel graphics, and commemorative door badges. The special edition also featured front and rear spoilers and a full factory decal package.

Inside, the Pace Car model received a unique silver leather interior, mirrored T-top roof panels, sport seats, and branded floor mats. Standard equipment included air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, folding bucket seats, and a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel. The sale includes supporting documentation such as the Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, original order paperwork, a prior Oklahoma title, and the original window sticker still attached to the vehicle.
