When people call the C8 Corvette a supercar bargain, it raises an interesting question—how much performance are you really getting for the price? To find out, the team from The Fast Lane Car on YouTube lined up a $70,000 used 2020 C8 Corvette against a brand-new Mercedes-AMG GT63, a car that costs over $200,000 and promises German engineering at its finest.
The 2020 Corvette, equipped with the Z51 performance package, uses a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 producing 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, with a curb weight of around 3,500 pounds.
The Mercedes-AMG GT63 takes a different approach with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 making 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Its nine-speed automatic pushes nearly 4,600 pounds, and options like carbon-ceramic brakes push the price north of $200,000.
In the first quarter-mile race without launch control, both cars started evenly. The Corvette’s lighter weight gave it an edge early, but the AMG’s extra power carried it past at the finish line. With launch control activated, the GT63 dominated, running an 11.59-second quarter mile at altitude. In a 0–120 mph and back-to-zero test, its acceleration and braking showed a clear advantage that the Corvette couldn’t match.
