The Overview
The C5 Corvette Z06 was built 2001–2004, 28,388 cars by GM’s counts. The return of the Z06 name: the fixed-roof hardtop body, the 385- then 405-hp LS6, a six-speed only, 3,118 pounds and a $47,500 price that undercut everything it could outrun.
The first modern Z06: the fixed-roof hardtop body, the lightest C5 at 3,118 pounds, with the LS6, a close-ratio M12 six-speed, FE4 suspension, 17 x 9.5 and 18 x 10.5-inch wheels on Eagle F1 Supercars, a titanium exhaust and functional brake ducts. 385 horsepower and $47,500 in 2001; 405 horsepower, 3.9 seconds to 60 and 171 mph from 2002, at $50,150 to $52,385. Chevrolet built 28,388: 5,773, 8,297, 8,635 and 5,683, the last 2,025 as Commemorative Editions with the carbon-fiber hood. In 2026 driven Z06s sold for $16,300 to $36,500, the best delivery-mileage cars for $41,500 to $55,000, and Classic.com’s benchmark sat around $28,500; the 2004 Commemorative Z06 benchmark was about $34,800.

The C5 Corvette Z06 Story
Bringing Back The Z06 Badge For The Corvette C5
After the dismal first half of the generation for the Corvette C4, things had started to look up in the early 1990s as the ZR-1 was released, the base spec options were increased, and interest in the branding started to grow again. However, by the time the high performance ZR-1, which had an at the time astounding 375 HP, had been developed and released, in its first year it was listed at $58,995 (approximately $133,700 in 2022 USD). This made it exorbitantly expensive, and a car for the wealthier of the Corvette enthusiasts.
Just under 7,000 ZR-1s were made, proving that there was a demand for higher-performance, race-car-derived Corvettes. Chevrolet took notice of that and while the Corvette C5 was being developed, they increased the base car’s performance with the LS1 V8 to 350 HP. As well, to reduce the overall cost of the C5, it was a totally new design, unlike an evolution of the previous generation’s chassis and design from the first four generations. It was affordably priced at $37,495 (about $69,100 today) and proved extremely popular from the start, selling almost 10,000 cars in 1997 alone after going on sale in August of that year.
However, from the start of production, there were plans to both create a race car version of the car, the Corvette C5.R, and a subsequent “race car for the road” version based on it. However, as the ZR-1 tag was still heavily associated with the fourth generation as it entered into the secondary and auction/resale market, another tag that signified racing performance in a road car was needed. The car itself was coming along nicely, development was going smoothly, but there was no tag attached to it.
In what we can only imagine was a meeting in a nameless boardroom at General Motors where an employee that was a Corvette history enthusiast suggested looking at the first year of the C2, as the Z06 code simply screamed out from the annals of history. As the C5 Z06 was going to be a lightweight, race-car derived option package, it was the perfect fit. This time around, however, the marketing and design team at Chevrolet were not bound by a ban on advertising a car as a race car for the road, and were not prevented from referring to the 1-2 victory of the C5.R at the 2001 24 Hours of Le Mans. The design team drew up a badge or twenty, and once one was selected, the Z06 made its first appearance on the side of a Corvette in August 2001.
For the Corvette C5, it was a mild upgrade, boosting the LS1 engine to 385 HP and codifying that upgrade as the LS6. A year later, that power was boosted to 405 HP, making the C5 Z06 one of the few American sports cars at the turn of the century that boasted over 400 HP. The Z06 was also restricted to being a hardtop coupe only, had race-derived FE4 suspension and springs, larger wheels and tires, functional brake cooling ducts (supercar level technology at the time), a special gear ratio setup for acceleration and top end speed, and featured a titanium exhaust system, thinner glass, a reduction in sound proofing, even going as far as using a lighter weight battery for the car.
As a result, the Corvette C5 Z06 was rapid, with 0 to 60 times in the low 4 seconds, sub-12 second quarter miles, and could hold over 1.02 G in skidpad testing, making it one of the best handling, fastest sports cars at the time. The Z06 sold like hotcakes despite being priced $10,000 above the base C5 coupe, as of the nearly 250,000 Corvette C5s sold between 1997 and 2004, 11.5% were Z06s, or put another way, just under 29,000 C5 Z06s were made.
As we all know, the subsequent generations that had race car versions also had a Z06 version come out a couple of years afterwards, including the current Corvette C8 Z06, the one of the most powerful cars that Chevrolet has sold. Ever. But, starting with the sixth generation, there was another badge that you could have affixed to the front fenders (or rear air scoops for the C8) of your Corvette…

2002 Corvette Z06
The 405-horsepower year. The LS6 gained a camshaft with 0.7 mm more lift, hollow-stem intake and sodium-filled exhaust valves, a low-restriction mass-airflow sensor and air cleaner and lost its two pup catalytic converters, for 405 hp at 6,000 rpm and 400 lb-ft at 4,800, the output of the C4 ZR-1’s LT5 in a car 400 pounds lighter; the clutch gained 7 percent clamp load and a thicker flange plate, the FE4 suspension revised rear shocks and cast-aluminum stabilizer links, the wheels went from forged to cast-spun, the front pads to a fade-resistant compound and the Head-Up Display became standard, with Electron Blue replacing Speedway White on the five-color chart. Chevrolet quoted 3.9 seconds to 60 mph, 12.4 at 116 in the quarter and 1.0 g for $50,150 (up $2,650), and 8,297 were sold, 1,467 Quicksilver, 1,814 Electron Blue, 2,205 Black, 1,746 Torch Red and 1,065 Millennium Yellow.

The C5 Corvette Z06 Buyer’s Guide
The C5 Z06 is the entry point to the Z06 line and the one the market is just starting to collect: 385 then 405 hp from the LS6, the fixed-roof hardtop body, a six-speed only, about 28,000 cars in four years and prices that still start in the twenties. The questions are the year (2001 or the 405-hp 2002–04), the mileage, and the C5’s well-known electrical items.
Buy a 2002–04 car for the 405 hp and the updated springs and dampers unless a 2001 is cheap enough to matter; the 2004 Commemorative Edition (2,025 built, LeMans Blue with the carbon hood) is the collector car. Mileage is the price driver and the cheapest cars have the most of it; a 30,000-mile car with the column lock sorted and the fuel sensors done is the sweet spot.

How to Verify a C5 Corvette Z06
The VIN positions, the labels, the stampings and the parts that prove a C5 Corvette Z06 is what it claims to be, from the year pages, year by year; where a later year repeats an earlier one, only what is new is added.
2001: Verifying a Z06: an S in the eighth VIN position and a 1 in the sixth, 1YY37, LS6, M12 and FE4 on the console service parts label, the fixed rear window and trunk, mesh grilles in the front fascia, rear brake scoops, red calipers and engine cover, Z06 fender badges, the 6,500-rpm cluster, embroidered headrests and mats, forged 17 x 9.5 / 18 x 10.5 wheels, and no run-flat sensors. A G in the eighth position with Z06 trim is a 1999–2000 hardtop or a converted coupe. On any 2001, the label confirms the package (1SB/1SC), transmission, suspension, wheels and the $600 paints.
2002: Verifying a 2002 Z06: an S in the eighth VIN position with a 2 in the tenth, 1YY37, LS6, M12 and FE4 on the console label, the HUD (standard this year), cast-spun wheels (the 2001’s were forged), red calipers and engine cover, rear brake scoops, mesh grilles and no pup converters on the exhaust manifolds.
2003: Verifying a 50th Anniversary Edition: 1SC on the build sheet, window sticker and console service parts label, paint code 94 (Anniversary Red) and the Shale interior with embroidered anniversary emblems on the seats and mats, padded armrests, champagne wheels with anniversary caps, a Shale top on a convertible and F55 on the label. A Z06 shows an S in the eighth VIN position with a 3 in the tenth, 1YY37, LS6, M12 and FE4 on the label, the HUD and the thicker 2003 headliner. On any 2003 the label settles the package, transmission, suspension, wheels and the $750 paint.
2004: Verifying a Commemorative Edition: on a Z06, Z16 on the build sheet, window sticker and console label, paint code 19, the carbon-fiber hood (check the underside and the weave in the stripe’s red border. The site’s Z06 Commemorative sequence post can match a Z16 car’s VIN. On any 2004, the label settles the package, transmission, suspension, wheels and the $750 paints, and an S in the eighth VIN position with a 2 in the sixth is a Z18 or a swap.

The C5 Corvette Z06 Inspection List
What to check on a C5 Corvette Z06 before the money changes hands, from the year pages, with each year adding what is new.
2001: The inspection list is the C5’s with a Z06 layer. All cars: the electronic column lock (recall 04V060) and its bypass, the EBCM and wheel-speed sensors behind ABS and Active Handling lights (the early EBCM is a known weak point, and a repair guide is on this site), the harmonic balancer, rocker-arm bearings, warped rotors, fuel senders, window regulators, headlight bezel plugs, roof-panel creaks and seat bolsters. Z06: the 2001 LS6 had its own valve-spring issue (weaker springs than the 2002–04 cars, often replaced under warranty or by owners), the M12 is harder on its synchros when driven hard, the Eagle F1 Supercars wear fast and are expensive, the titanium exhaust is easily damaged by jacking in the wrong place and costly to replace, and the stock clutch and the torque tube’s coupler are the usual track casualties. A 2001 Z06 with its springs done, its exhaust intact and its paperwork is the cheapest way into the LS6, and a 350-hp six-speed coupe with 1SC is the LS1 C5 at its most complete.
2002: Z06: the 2002 valve springs are the stronger type, but the sodium-filled exhaust valves and their guides are the LS6’s known weak point on abused engines, the cast-spun wheels crack on potholes and are often replaced with 2001 forged or aftermarket wheels, the Supercar tires are expensive, the titanium exhaust is easily damaged, and track use shows in the clutch, the torque-tube coupler and the differential. A 2002 Z06 with its paperwork, its wheels and an unmodified LS6 is the C5 most buyers should be looking for.
2003: The inspection list is the C5’s plus the year’s own. Z06: the sodium-filled exhaust valves and guides on abused engines, cracked cast-spun wheels, the clutch and torque-tube coupler on tracked cars, and the titanium exhaust. A 2003 Z06 with its paperwork is the sweet spot of the C5 Z06 years, and a low-mileage anniversary convertible with the six-speed is the C5 most likely to appreciate.
2004: The inspection list is the C5’s, at its most mature. The 2004 Z06 is the one to buy if you want the best-driving C5, the Commemorative if you want the one that will be remembered, and a low-mileage coupe or convertible Commemorative with the six-speed the cheapest way to own a C5 with a story.

What Goes Wrong: The C5 Corvette Z06’s Known Issues
The faults a C5 Corvette Z06 is known for, the years they affect, what they look like and what the fix is. None of them should stop a purchase; all of them should be on the checklist, and a car with the paperwork for them is the one to buy.
| ISSUE | YEARS | WHAT HAPPENS | THE FIX |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electronic column lock | 2001–04 | The lock fails and the car will not start, or (worse) locks the column on the move; recall 04V060. | The recall relay or a bypass; ask which the car has. |
| Valve springs | 2001 | The 2001 LS6’s springs broke and dropped valves; GM replaced many. | Ask for the paperwork; upgraded springs are cheap insurance. |
| Fuel level sensors | 2001–04 | The sulfur in modern fuel kills the sending units and the gauge reads wrong or the light stays on. | Replacement sensors; a tank-out job that most cars have had. |
| EBCM and wheel-speed sensors | 2001–04 | ABS and traction warnings from a failing brake control module or a dirty sensor. | The site has a DIY on the EBCM; the sensors are cheap. |
| Headlamp motors | 2001–04 | The pop-up headlamp gears strip and a lamp stays down. | Brass gear kits; an afternoon’s job. |
| Steering-wheel position sensor | 2001–04 | Lights the traction and ABS warnings intermittently. | An inexpensive sensor. |
| Tires | 2001–04 | The original Goodyear F1 Supercar tires are long gone and the sizes are limited. | Check what is fitted and its age. |
| Clutch and torque tube | 2001–04 | The clutch and the torque-tube bearings wear on hard-driven cars. | A rumble from behind the seats; price it in. |
The C5 Corvette Z06 Options and Editions That Matter
What moves the price of a C5 Corvette Z06 beyond mileage and condition: the packages, the equipment groups and the special editions, and what each does to the value.
MORE: THE SPECIAL EDITIONS / MSRP BY YEAR
| OPTION OR EDITION | WHY IT MATTERS | WHAT IT DOES TO THE PRICE |
|---|---|---|
| 405-hp engine (2002–04) | The revised LS6 with the hollow-stem valves and the higher-lift cam. | A small premium over a 2001. |
| Commemorative Edition (2004) | 2,025 Z06s in LeMans Blue with the carbon hood and the Le Mans badges. | The C5 Z06 premium; the hood alone is worth money. |
| Head-up display and 1SB/1SC groups | The HUD and the upgraded interior. | Expected on better cars. |
| Color | Torch Red and Black lead; Quicksilver, Speedway White, Millennium Yellow and Electron Blue follow. | Yellow and blue carry a small premium. |
| Low mileage | Many C5 Z06s have been driven hard; the garage cars stand out. | The price driver. |
What a C5 Corvette Z06 Costs to Own
A C5 Z06 is the cheapest Z06 to own by a distance: the LS6 is a wet-sump pushrod V8 any shop can service, parts are shared with every C5, tires are the only unusual size and the car returns 25 mpg on the highway. The electrical items above are inexpensive once sorted and most cars have been.
Insure it as a classic on an agreed value if it is a Commemorative Edition or a low-mileage car; otherwise an ordinary policy.

FAQs
What years was the C5 Corvette Z06 made?
2001–2004, 4 model years. The return of the Z06 name: the fixed-roof hardtop body, the 385- then 405-hp LS6, a six-speed only, 3,118 pounds and a $47,500 price that undercut everything it could outrun.
How many C5 Corvette Z06s were built?
28,388 by GM’s counts: 2001 5,773, 2002 8,297, 2003 8,635, 2004 5,683.
How much horsepower does the C5 Corvette Z06 have?
LS6 5.7-liter V8, 385 hp (2001) / 405 hp (2002–04). 385 to 405 horsepower across the years
How fast is the C5 Corvette Z06?
2001: 0–60 in 4.0 s, 171 mph · 2002: 0–60 in 3.9 s, 171 mph · 2004: 0–60 in 4.2 s, 171 mph (GM’s figures or the period tests; the Compared page has them all).
How much did the C5 Corvette Z06 cost new?
2001: $47,500 · 2002: $50,150 · 2003: $51,155 · 2004: $52,385. The MSRP by Year page has every year in today’s dollars.
What is a C5 Corvette Z06 worth today?
See What to Pay in the buyer’s guide above: the site’s tracked auction and dealer results by year. The figures move, and the for-sale feed shows asking prices now.
Why did the C5 Z06 use the hardtop body?
The fixed-roof coupe introduced in 1999 was the stiffest and lightest C5 body, so Chevrolet made it the Z06’s only form; the titanium exhaust, lighter glass and battery and the FE4 suspension took it to 3,118 pounds.
What changed on the 2002 Z06?
The LS6 went from 385 to 405 horsepower with a hotter cam, lighter valves and a revised intake, the shocks were retuned and the 0–60 time fell to four seconds flat; 2002–04 cars are the ones most buyers want.
What is the 2004 Commemorative Edition Z06?
The Le Mans Blue Metallic Z06 with silver stripes, a carbon-fiber hood (the first on a production Corvette, 10.6 pounds lighter), special wheels and a 24 Heures du Mans badge, honoring the C5-R’s three Le Mans wins; 2,025 were built.
Which C5 Z06 year is best?
A 2002–04 for the 405 hp and the revised suspension; the 2004 Commemorative Edition is the collector car and the 2002 the value. A 2001 is the cheapest and fine with the springs and the column lock sorted.
What breaks on a C5 Z06?
The electronic column lock, the fuel level sensors, the EBCM and wheel-speed sensors, the headlamp motors and, on 2001s, the valve springs. All are well known and cheap to fix; the site’s C5 buyer’s guide and DIY posts cover them.
Is the C5 Z06 going up in value?
The site has asked exactly that: the best cars have risen while ordinary cars are flat, and the Commemorative Edition leads. It is the last Z06 that can still be bought for the price of a new economy car.
