The Overview
The C3 Corvette ZR1 was built 1970–1972, 45 cars by GM’s counts. The racing package of the LT-1 years: 53 cars over three years with the solid-lifter 350, the M22 Rock Crusher, heavy-duty brakes, springs and shocks, and no radio, air or power anything, plus the twelve 454 ZR2s of 1971.
The first ZR1 was a race package, not a model: the Special Purpose Engine Package put the solid-lifter LT-1 small block together with the M22 Rock Crusher, heavy-duty brakes, springs, shocks and anti-roll bars, a metal fan shroud and an aluminum radiator, and it could not be ordered with a radio, air conditioning, power steering or wheel covers. Chevrolet built 25 in 1970, 8 in 1971 and 20 in 1972. The ZR2 of 1971 was the same package around the 425-horsepower aluminum-head LS6 454, twelve cars, two of them convertibles that have sold for $962,500 and $863,500. The ZR-1 name returned on the C4 in 1990.
This page has every model year of the C3 Corvette ZR1 in its own section with the year page’s account, the specs, the numbers and the posts; the figures by year; the colors; how it compares to its siblings; the site’s guides, videos and news; and a buyer’s guide: which year to buy, what to pay, how to verify one, what goes wrong and the site’s market reports. The Corvette ZR1 guide has the whole line across every generation.
The C3 Corvette ZR1 Story
The 1970–72 Corvette ZR1
The ZR1 name first appeared without a hyphen during the 1970 model year, when it was a performance package for the C3 Corvette.
The third-generation Corvette ZR1 was first introduced in 1970 as the successor to the L88 Corvette. The car, which could be ordered as Regular Production Option (RPO) ZR1, came equipped with a new, solid-lifter, small-block engine that GM designated the LT1. The LT1 engine, which was manufactured by GM from 1970–1972, was a 350 cubic-inch small block that produced 370 horsepower. It featured 11:1 compression, a ‘178’ high-performance camshaft and a 780 CFM Holley four-barrel carburetor mounted to a special aluminum intake. Although not as powerful as the L88, the LT1 engine offered consumers an exciting engine platform that could power their Corvettes at and around the racetrack.
In addition to the LT1 engine, Corvettes ordered with RPO ZR1 came equipped with the M22 “Rockcrusher” transmission, heavy-duty power brakes with dual-pin front brake calipers (J56), a transistor ignition, a special aluminum radiator and a heavier-duty suspension package that included bolstered 7-leaf rear springs, shocks and heavy-duty 5/8 inch front sway bars and rear spindle struts/stabilizer bars. The car also came equipped with metal fan shrouds. Moreover, when ordering a ZR1, the following options were deleted from the Corvette, including: a rear window defroster (C50), air-conditioning (C60), power steering (N40), deluxe wheel covers (P02), the alarm system (UA6), AM/FM radio (U69) and AM/FM Radio, stereo (U79).
The deletion of these items was intentionally designed to help reduce the car’s overall weight as well as to reduce the power load put on the engine, thereby ensuring that more power was transferred from the engine, through the transmission and to the rear wheels. In fact, it was impossible to order the ZR1 with any of the “creature comforts” synonymous with the more conventional Corvettes being offered by Chevrolet dealers across the nation. Despite this, the 1970 Corvette ZR1 could be ordered as a convertible!

The C3 Corvette ZR1 Buyer’s Guide
The 1970–72 ZR1 is the rarest regular-production Corvette package: 25, 8 and 20 cars, the LT-1 small block with the M22, the J56 brakes, the F41 suspension and no radio, air or power steering, plus the twelve 1971 ZR2s with the LS6 454. They are registry cars and they seldom trade; buying one is a matter of documentation, patience and the auctions where they appear.
A ZR1 verifies itself only on paper: the tank sticker or the build sheet with the package, the CTV engine suffix on a 1970, the LT-1 hood and the deleted options. Many LT-1 cars have been dressed as ZR1s because the parts are the same; without the paperwork, pay LT-1 money.

How to Verify a C3 Corvette ZR1
The VIN positions, the labels, the stampings and the parts that prove a C3 Corvette ZR1 is what it claims to be, from the year pages, year by year; where a later year repeats an earlier one, only what is new is added.
1970: Verification on a 1970 starts with the engine pad: a V prefix and a CTK, CTR or CTU suffix (CTV for a ZR1) on a 3970010 block with 3973414 heads, a Holley R4489A or R4555A, the aluminum intake and the 2.5-inch exhaust make an LT-1, and the partial VIN stamped beside the suffix must match the car. A ZR1 needs the LT-1 plus the M22, the J56 calipers and proportioning valve, the F41 springs, the K66 distributor and the aluminum radiator with its metal shroud, and no factory radio or air conditioning. NCRS and Bloomington Gold judging sheets and old photographs help with all of them.
1971: Verification follows the 1970 drill with the 1971 codes: a V-prefix 3970010 block with a CGY suffix (CGZ for a ZR1), 3973487 heads, the Holley and aluminum intake and the 2.5-inch exhaust make an LT-1. An LS6 is the most valuable engine of the year and the easiest to fake with a set of aluminum heads on an LS5, so the suffix, the casting dates and the build sheet or tank sticker matter more than the badges, and a ZR2 or ZR1 needs the M22, J56 brakes, F41 bars, K66 distributor and aluminum radiator and no factory radio or air.
1972: Verification is easier on a 1972 than on any earlier Corvette because the fifth VIN character names the engine: L is an LT-1, W an LS5, K a base car, and a 350 with an LT-1 hood and a K in the VIN is a tribute. From there the engine pad should show a V prefix and a CKY suffix (CKZ for a ZR1, CRT or CRS with the air pump) on a 3970010 or 3970014 block with 3998916 heads, the Holley, the aluminum intake and the 2.5-inch exhaust, and the partial VIN stamped beside the suffix must match the car. A ZR1 needs the M22, J56 brakes, F41 bars, K66 distributor and aluminum radiator and no factory radio, air or power assists, and all twenty are known to the registries.

What to check on a C3 Corvette ZR1 before the money changes hands, from the year pages, with each year adding what is new.
1970: The C3 body sits on the C2’s birdcage and rusts in the same places: the windshield frame, the door hinge pillars and the frame kickups over the rear wheels and around the trailing-arm mounts. Budget for the vacuum system, seals and brakes on any 1970 that has sat, and for a correct LT-1 carburetor if the car has lost its original.
1971: Budget for the vacuum system, seals and brakes on any 1971 that has sat.

The faults a C3 Corvette ZR1 is known for, the years they affect, what they look like and what the fix is. None of them should stop a purchase; all of them should be on the checklist, and a car with the paperwork for them is the one to buy.
