VIDEO: Richard Hammond Tests The 670-HP Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Is the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 worth £220,000 in the UK?

Richard Hammond takes the Chevrolet C8 Corvette Z06 onto the B4560 in Wales to explore its engineering, performance, and market positioning. Equipped with a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 producing 670 horsepower, the Z06 combines traditional American performance with a mid-engine layout and the capabilities of a modern supercar. However, while Hammond admires its engineering, its £220,000 UK price raises questions about its value against established European rivals.

The centerpiece is a hand-assembled V8 featuring a flat-plane crankshaft. Unlike turbocharged engines that use forced induction to increase output, Chevrolet’s naturally aspirated powerplant relies on high engine speeds and immediate throttle response. The flat-plane configuration reduces rotating inertia, allowing the engine to rev more freely and deliver a distinctive, motorsport-inspired exhaust note.

Chevrolet quotes a 0–60 mph acceleration time of just 2.7 seconds. Aggressive aerodynamic components, including carbon-fiber splitters and fins, reinforce the Z06’s performance credentials, while its vivid yellow paint references the marque’s racing heritage. A dedicated viewing window also showcases the engine as a defining element of the car’s design.

The Evolution of the Mid-Engine Corvette

The Z06 represents a fundamental departure from the Corvette’s traditional front-engine architecture, which defined the model for generations. However, Chevrolet had explored mid-engine concepts since 1968, developing numerous experimental designs before committing to the configuration for the C8 generation in 2019.

The transition placed the engine behind the driver, creating proportions and packaging more closely associated with European exotic cars. For Hammond, the latest Z06 demonstrates that Chevrolet has successfully adapted this architecture without abandoning the Corvette’s distinctly American character.

Chassis Dynamics and Interior Technology

On Wales’s demanding roads, Hammond praises the adaptive suspension and substantial tires, which provide reassuring grip and composure despite the car’s considerable weight. The chassis combines high-performance capability with a sense of stability, allowing the driver to experience the engine’s considerable output with confidence.

Inside, the cabin features quality materials, well-finished surfaces, and three digital displays with configurable instrumentation. Although some performance data may be excessive for everyday driving, the technology complements the Z06’s engineering-focused identity.

Is the Corvette Z06 Worth £220,000?

The greatest challenge is pricing. In the United States, a rough currency conversion places the Z06 at approximately £90,000. In the UK, Hammond’s highly specified example costs around £220,000, reflecting right-hand-drive conversion, homologation, regulatory compliance, taxation, and equipment.

At this level, the Corvette competes with cars such as the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and premium European supercars. Although the Z06 offers a distinctive combination of naturally aspirated performance and mid-engine dynamics, its substantial UK price premium makes the purchasing decision more complicated.
