The arrival of the 2001 C5 Chevrolet Corvette was met with an ever-increasing amount of excitement and anticipation. Over the past four years, both the coupe and convertible had already proven themselves as being some of the “best in class” since the introduction of the C5 in 1997.

Additionally, the FRC had demonstrated General Motors commitment to provide driving enthusiasts with a machine that would better meet the rigors of performance driving with its improved suspension and more rigid body design.

Even now, while its engineering and design teams were continuing to further refine the Corvette base models, they were also about to begin an entirely new chapter that would include a new stablemate for the coupe and convertible – namely, the Z06 Edition Hardtop Coupe.

Built on the Fixed Roof Coupe (FRC) platform introduced with the 1999 and 2000 models, this replacement to the earlier hardtop model was built to rival the horsepower and performance numbers boasted by the C4 ZR-1 Corvette, yet was priced at only a fraction of the cost. Starting at $46,855, the Z06 Corvette would immediately become recognized as the flagship of the Corvette line.

Mechanical advances to the 2001 Corvette included the introduction of a larger-diameter aluminum driveshaft, and base models equipped with manual-gearbox versions received a revised clutch that required less pedal pressure to engage.

The idea to develop a true “race-ready” Corvette really stemmed from the discontented mind of David Hill, Corvette’s Chief Engineer, who simply wasn’t satisfied with the current performance aspects of the C5 Corvette.

2001 Corvette “Tiger Shark” Concept

Chevrolet Corvette “Tiger Shark” Concept, 1997. A C5 Corvette powered by an alloy 742hp LS1 427ci supercharged V8. Other modifications included upgraded Brembo brakes, 18-inch Kinesis Motorsport K58 forged wheels and a hood dome to clear the supercharger. It was built by Detroit prototype shop Wheel-To-Wheel and sold for $112,200 in 2009 at the GM Heritage car auction.

2001 – 2004 Corvette Z06

A successor to the ZR-1 made its debut in 2001 as the Z06, giving a nod to the high-performance Z06 version of the C2 Corvette of the 1960s. The Z06 uses a tuned version of the standard LS1 engine (designated the LS6), with a higher power output of 385 hp (390 PS; 287 kW), later bumped to 405 hp (411 PS; 302 kW) starting in 2002.

1999 – 2004 Corvette C5-R

The Corvette C5-R was part of a plan by General Motors and their Chevrolet brand to create a factory team to participate in grand touring races not only in North America, but also elsewhere in the world, most notably at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. GM had previously been against approving factory support for Corvette racing programs, although the IMSA GT Championship's Corvette GTPs had seen some support until they ended competition in 1989.
