Can the McLaren 750S beat the 2027 Corvette ZR1?

The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and McLaren 750S represent two radically different approaches to extracting supercar-level performance, and savagegeese put both to the ultimate test at Autobahn Country Club. With engineers from Chevrolet and McLaren involved in setup and data analysis, professional driver Britt Casey subjected the cars to repeated track sessions, evaluating braking, cornering, acceleration, feedback, and overall lap-time potential.

The ZR1 emerged as the outright performance benchmark. Its twin-turbocharged LT7 V8 produces more than 1,000 horsepower, with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential helping deploy that immense output. Massive tires, sophisticated electronic chassis systems, and the latest 10-piston Alcon front brake package give the Corvette exceptional mechanical grip and confidence under extreme loads. Casey recorded a 1:23.7 lap, a time that would still rank as the fastest car savagegeese had tested at the circuit despite being slower than the Corvette’s previous benchmark.

The McLaren 750S takes a fundamentally different route. Its carbon-fiber monocoque, hydraulic suspension, hydraulic steering, and substantially lower mass prioritize communication and driver involvement. The 750S provides considerably more steering and braking feedback, allowing the driver to feel tire loading, weight transfer, ABS intervention, and chassis movement more directly. Its high-revving engine also rewards aggressive use of the upper rev range rather than relying on abundant low-end torque.

Yet the McLaren could not match the Corvette’s overall pace. Its narrower tires and different chassis philosophy limited lateral grip, while its open-differential concept produced more noticeable transitions between understeer and oversteer. Its strongest advantage appeared on the main straight, where efficient aerodynamics helped it reach 148.8 mph—roughly 2 mph faster than the ZR1 during testing.

Ultimately, the ZR1 won on objective performance, delivering greater speed, grip, and accessibility. The McLaren, however, offered the more engaging and communicative driving experience. The comparison demonstrates that outright lap time and driver involvement remain two very different measures of supercar excellence.
