Few Corvettes embody Chevrolet’s racing ambitions quite like the L88. Produced in extremely limited numbers from 1967 through 1969, the L88 package was engineered as a competition-focused machine rather than a conventional road car. Although officially rated at just 430 horsepower, the all-aluminum-headed 427-cubic-inch V8 was widely recognized as producing substantially more power. Chevrolet intentionally understated its output and marketed the option toward serious racers, helping it comply with General Motors’ corporate racing restrictions while discouraging casual buyers.
Now listed for sale on Bring a Trailer, this 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible is one of only 216 L88-equipped Corvettes built across the package’s three-year production run and one of just 116 examples produced for the 1969 model year. Originally ordered by a U.S. serviceman stationed in South Korea through GM Overseas Distribution Corporation, the Corvette was completed on April 9, 1969, before being collected in Atlanta upon the owner’s return to the United States.
Finished in its factory-correct Le Mans Blue over a black vinyl interior, the convertible is accompanied by both a black soft top and an optional removable hardtop. The car has enjoyed careful stewardship throughout its life, including more than two decades with an NCRS and Bloomington Gold judge, followed by ownership within several prominent collections.
Power comes from the original L88-specification 427 V8, featuring aluminum cylinder heads, forged internals, a high-lift solid-lifter camshaft, a 12.5:1 compression ratio, and a Holley four-barrel carburetor mounted on an aluminum intake manifold. Factory-installed transistor ignition, a block heater, and the original smog pump remain in place. The engine’s authenticity is further supported by matching stampings and a Classic Car Affirmation Services certification.
The drivetrain includes the mandatory Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” four-speed manual transmission paired with a 4.56:1 Positraction rear axle. As required by the L88 package, the Corvette also features the F41 heavy-duty suspension, power-assisted J56 heavy-duty disc brakes, and 15-inch Rally wheels wrapped in Firestone redline tires.
Inside, the black Comfortweave vinyl cabin remains faithful to the L88’s minimalist philosophy, omitting air conditioning, power steering, and a radio while retaining factory options such as deluxe shoulder belts, tinted glass, a rear window defroster, and an audio alarm. Showing approximately 20,000 miles, the Corvette has earned an exceptional list of honors, including NCRS Top Flight, MCACN Triple Diamond, Bloomington Gold Certification, Bloomington Gold Survivor status, multiple Bloomington Gold Special Collection appearances, and induction into the Bloomington Gold Hall of Fame.
