The C6 Corvette Z06 marked a significant leap in bringing track technology to the street, the closest since the high-performance L88 models of the late 1960s. Drawing heavily from advancements made by the Pratt & Miller Corvette Racing team, Chevrolet created the C6 Z06 to be the ultimate street-legal Corvette.
At its heart was the hand-assembled LS7 427/505 HP all-aluminum small-block V8 engine, paired with a 6-speed transaxle. Built at GM’s Performance Build Center in Michigan, the LS7 featured steel cylinder sleeves, titanium connecting rods and intake valves, and a dry-sump oiling system with an 8-quart capacity.
The Z06 also boasted a lightweight hydro-formed aluminum frame, fabricated by Dana Corporation, which was 30% lighter than traditional steel. Additional weight reductions came from a magnesium roll cage and engine cradle.
The Z06’s aggressive styling featured wider rear fenders, carbon fiber front fenders, brake-cooling scoops, and a fresh air intake above an enlarged front grille. Exclusive 19-inch front and 20-inch rear aluminum wheels, along with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires and larger disc brakes, completed this high-performance package.
