The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and Porsche 911 Turbo S represent two very different approaches to extreme straight-line performance. In a new high-speed showdown from The Fast Lane Car, the American naturally aspirated sports car goes head-to-head with Porsche’s turbocharged all-wheel-drive weapon in a series of drag and roll races designed to expose the strengths—and weaknesses—of both machines.
The Corvette Z06 brings a high-revving 5.5-liter flat-plane-crank V8 to the fight, producing 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. With a relatively low curb weight of around 3,500 pounds, the Z06 places a strong emphasis on power-to-weight ratio and immediate throttle response. Its engine’s ability to rev to 8,500 rpm adds another dimension to the battle, particularly when the cars are already moving.
The 911 Turbo S counters with a very different formula. Its 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six develops 640 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, while all-wheel drive provides additional traction when launching from a standstill. The Porsche is also considerably heavier, but its turbocharged power delivery and sophisticated drivetrain are engineered to turn that extra mass into devastating acceleration.
However, the setting introduces another variable. The races take place on an airstrip roughly a mile above sea level, where reduced air density can affect engine performance. That could prove especially significant for the Corvette’s naturally aspirated V8, while the Porsche’s twin-turbo setup has a different way of coping with the thinner atmosphere.
The numbers suggest a battle decided by fractions of a second. But once both drivers bury the throttle, the gap begins to change rapidly—and the final result may not be what anyone expects. So, which one crosses the line first?
