Chevrolet spent real money selling its flagship on television, yet most enthusiasts missed these spots. Ten commercials spanning the 1953 promo film, a sci-fi flavored 1984 C4 launch ad and the C8 reveal, with video links.
The Basics
What This Is: The Corvette’s advertising, year by year: the magazine and newspaper ads, the posters, the dealer postcards and showroom pieces, and the television commercials
Years Covered: 1953 to 2022, every model year except 1983; one page per year
The Campaigns: The 1950s sports-car-for-America folders; the 1960s Sting Ray ads and Campbell-Ewald’s copy; the 1970s shark and lifestyle ads; the 1984 technology launch; the C5 and C6 power ads; the C7 Stingray and the C8 mid-engine reveal
The Agency: Campbell-Ewald of Detroit wrote and placed Chevrolet’s advertising from 1922 to 2010, including every Corvette ad of the classic era
Why Collect Them: An ad is dated evidence of what the factory offered and how it wanted the car seen; the originals are collected and framed, and the posters of the 1960s and 1970s are their own market
Related Research: The sales brochures (the showroom piece), the order guides, the dealer playbooks, the year pages where each year’s ads sit with the rest of its documents
The Overview
Before the internet, a Corvette was sold in the pages of Life, Look, the Saturday Evening Post, Motor Trend and Road & Track, and the ads are a history of what Chevrolet thought the car was. The 1953–55 pieces sell a sports car to a country that had never had one; the late-1950s ads sell Daytona and Sebring; the Sting Ray ads of the 1960s, written by Campbell-Ewald, sell the only true American sports car with a wit the company never matched again; the 1970s sell the shark shape, the T-tops and the lifestyle as the horsepower fell; 1984 sells technology; the C5 and C6 sell power and value against the Europeans; the C7 sells the Stingray name and the C8 sells the mid-engine idea the company had resisted for sixty years.
This page is the index: a page per model year with every ad, poster and dealer piece we have, organized by generation with the year beside each one, plus the television commercials, the best-ads feature and the fifty iconic ads that open the collection. The explainer walks through the campaigns by decade.
An ad is also evidence. It is dated, it shows the colors, wheels and options of the year as the factory wanted them seen, and it often shows a pre-production car with details that never reached a dealer; the brochures and the order guides are the companions for checking a car, and the year pages put all three together.
Seventy Years of Corvette Advertising
The ads change with the car, the agency and the decade. Here is what each era sold and how.
1953–62: a sports car for America
The first ads had to explain what a Corvette was: a two-seat fiberglass roadster from Chevrolet, in Polo White, photographed and painted with the sun, the sea and a couple who had somewhere better to be. By 1956 the copy was about the V-8 and the racing (Sebring, Daytona, “The Real McCoy”), by 1957 about fuel injection and one horsepower per cubic inch, and the 1958–62 ads sold the options, the colors and the hardtop with the car in the foreground and the lifestyle behind it.
1963–67: the Sting Ray and Campbell-Ewald
The Sting Ray ads are the ones people frame. Campbell-Ewald’s copywriters gave the car a voice: the split-window coupe presented as sculpture, the big-block years sold on the stinger hood and the numbers, and the headlines that assumed the reader already wanted one. The 1963 television commercial for the Sting Ray is on the 1963 page.
1968–82: the shark, the T-tops and the lifestyle
The C3 was sold as a shape. The 1968–71 ads led with the big blocks and the LT-1 while they lasted; from 1972 the copy turned to the T-tops, the comfort, the colors and the people who drove the car, with the horsepower left out of the headline. The 1978 pace-car and 25th-anniversary ads, the 1980 restyle and the 1982 Collector Edition closed the run, and the posters of these years, the dealer pieces above all, are the most collected Corvette advertising.
1984–96: technology
The 1984 launch sold an all-new car on its engineering: the digital dash, the uniframe, the skidpad numbers and the comparison tests against Porsche and Ferrari. The ZR-1 ads of 1990 sold the LT5 and the speed records; the convertible, the anniversary editions and the Grand Sport each had a campaign, and the C4 ads are the first to lean on magazine test results as copy.
1997–2013: power and value
The C5 and C6 were sold as the most car for the money in the world: the LS1 and the hydroformed frame in 1997, the Z06 against the Porsche 911 from 2001, the 2005 C6 and the 505-horsepower Z06, the 638-horsepower ZR1 as the fastest Chevrolet ever built. The television commercials of these years are on the commercials page.
2014–22: the Stingray and the mid-engine reveal
The C7 brought the Stingray name back and the ads leaned on it, with the Z06, the Grand Sport and the ZR1 each getting a campaign; the C8’s advertising began with the reveal of July 2019 and the mid-engine idea itself, then the Stingray’s 2.9-second launch, the Z06’s flat-plane engine and the E-Ray. The 2020–22 pages carry the digital campaigns; later years are posted as we gather them.

FAQs
Where can I see the ads for my Corvette’s year?
In the generation tables above: one page per model year from 1953 to 2022 with every ad, poster and dealer piece we have, free to view. The year pages carry the same ads beside the brochure, the order guide and the manual.
Who made the Corvette ads?
Campbell-Ewald of Detroit, Chevrolet’s advertising agency from 1922 to 2010, wrote and placed the classic-era Corvette advertising including the Sting Ray campaigns; later work came from Chevrolet’s subsequent agencies. The photographers and illustrators are credited on the year pages where known.
What is the most famous Corvette ad?
The Sting Ray ads of 1963–67 are the most reproduced, the 1956 “The Real McCoy” Sebring ad the most historic, and the 1978 pace-car pieces the most collected posters. The 10 Best Corvette Ads You’ve Never Seen feature, linked above, makes the case for the ones you don’t know.
Are the Corvette TV commercials here?
Yes. The TV commercials category gathers them, from the 1963 Sting Ray spot (on the 1963 page) through the C5 and C6 commercials to the C8 campaigns, and the Best Ads grid links the features on them.
Can I use a Corvette ad to check a car?
For the colors, the wheels and the options offered in that year, yes, with the caution that ads often show pre-production or specially prepared cars and sometimes colors that were never sold. The brochure and the order guide for the year are the companions; the year pages put all three together.
Are original Corvette ads worth anything?
The magazine ads are inexpensive and widely collected and framed; the dealer posters and showroom pieces of the 1960s and 1970s, the 1978 pace-car material and anything from the Sting Ray years bring real money. Condition and originality (a page from the magazine versus a reprint) decide it.
Which years are missing?
1983, which had no production, and 2023 on, which are posted as we gather the digital campaigns. Any year with a page is in the tables above.
What other factory documents are there?
The sales brochures, the owner’s manuals, the order guides and RPO codes and, for 2017–20, the dealer playbooks; each has an index page linked above and all of them sit on the year pages.
