The Story of Tuxedo Black
Tuxedo Black was the Corvette’s black from 1958 to 1969, succeeding the Onyx Black of 1956–57. It was never the big seller the name suggests — 493 cars in 1958, 1,500 to 1,900 a year through the early 1960s, and only 815 in 1967 — because Corvette buyers of the era took red, white and the race-track blues first.
That scarcity is why it matters now. The first 1967 L88, Tony DeLorenzo’s convertible, was Tuxedo Black and the only black L88; black 1963 split-window coupes and 1967 427 cars are among the most sought-after mid-years. After 1969 no black was offered until 1977.
