National Corvette Museum Announces Its 2026 Corvette Hall of Fame Class
The National Corvette Museum has announced the four members of its 2026 Corvette Hall of Fame class, bringing together a designer, a product strategist, a senior General Motors executive, and one of the most important authors to chronicle the development of America’s Sports Car.
Kirk Bennion and Harlan Charles will enter the Hall of Fame in the GM/Chevrolet category, John Middlebrook will be honored in the Racing category, and the late James Schefter will be inducted in the Enthusiast category. The four will be formally recognized on Saturday, September 5, 2026, during the Museum’s 32nd Anniversary Celebration in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Bennion and Charles became two of the most familiar public faces of the modern Corvette program. Bennion began his General Motors career working on the Pontiac Fiero before joining Chevrolet’s Studio 3 in 1987. Over the following decades, he contributed to the fifth-, sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-generation Corvettes, ultimately helping shape the dramatic mid-engine C8.
As Corvette exterior design manager, Bennion helped translate the C8’s revolutionary mechanical layout into a shape that looked exotic while remaining recognizably Corvette. His work balanced visual drama with the functional requirements of cooling, aerodynamics, everyday usability, and high-performance driving.
Charles joined the Corvette team in 2001 and became equally influential from the product-planning side. By maintaining a close relationship with owners and enthusiasts, he helped transform customer feedback into equipment, performance upgrades, personalization choices, and special-edition models. Together, Bennion and Charles guided Corvette through multiple generations while building a level of trust with the enthusiast community that few automotive programs achieve.
Middlebrook’s contribution came from the executive suite, where institutional support was essential to Corvette’s long-term success. During a General Motors career spanning nearly five decades, he rose to become vice president of Global Sales, Service, and Marketing. As Chevrolet general manager beginning in 1996, Middlebrook viewed Corvette as the division’s flagship and supported the creation of Chevrolet’s factory-backed Corvette Racing program with Herb Fishel, Doug Fehan, and Pratt & Miller.
That commitment helped establish one of the most successful endurance-racing programs in modern American motorsports. Middlebrook also strengthened Corvette’s relationship with Indianapolis Motor Speedway, supporting the model’s recurring role as the official pace car of the Indianapolis 500.
Schefter earned his place by documenting one of the most consequential periods in Corvette history. A former Time and Life reporter who had covered the Apollo space program, he received extraordinary access inside General Motors while researching All Corvettes Are Red: Inside the Rebirth of an American Legend.
Published after years of observation and interviews, the book revealed the personalities, political struggles, engineering decisions, and financial pressures behind the C5 Corvette. Schefter’s work gave enthusiasts an unusually candid view of how the car survived a difficult era inside GM and emerged as a world-class sports car. Although he died in 2001, the book remains essential reading for anyone interested in Corvette development.
Established in 1998, the Corvette Hall of Fame recognizes individuals whose achievements, integrity, and influence have shaped Corvette history. The 2026 induction ceremony will be held at the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center, with doors opening at 5:00 p.m. Central Time and the ceremony beginning at 6:00 p.m.
