Chevrolet planned 300 replicas of the 1978 Indy Pace Car, one for each dealer. Dealers wanted more, the number grew to one per dealership nationwide, and 6,502 were built, a fifth of the year’s production. The price went from $13,653 to double that on the showroom floor, and forty-eight years later it is still the most-built pace car replica of all.

FAQs

How many times has the Corvette paced the Indianapolis 500?

Twenty-three times through the 2026 race: 1978, 1986, 1995, 1998, 2002, 2004–2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017–2026. That is more than any other model; Chevrolet as a brand has paced the race 37 times, starting with a 1948 Fleetmaster.

What was the first Corvette Indy 500 pace car?

The 1978 Corvette, a black-over-silver coupe driven by 1960 Indy 500 winner Jim Rathmann at the 62nd running on May 28, 1978. Chevrolet built 6,502 replicas, far more than the 300 originally planned.

Which Corvette pace car is the most valuable?

The 1978 Pace Car is the most collected, with low-mileage examples bringing $40,000 and up, but the rarest replicas are the 1995 (527 built) and the 2007 and 2008 editions (500 each). The actual track cars from 2004 onward were never sold as replicas.

Who has driven the Corvette pace car at Indy?

Racers (Jim Rathmann, Parnelli Jones, Emerson Fittipaldi, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Danica Patrick, Sarah Fisher), military figures (Chuck Yeager, Colin Powell), actors (Morgan Freeman, Jim Caviezel, Patrick Dempsey, Jeffrey Dean Morgan), athletes (Lance Armstrong, Victor Oladipo, Tyrese Haliburton, Ken Griffey Jr., Michael Strahan), coaches Jim Harbaugh and Curt Cignetti, Guy Fieri, and GM executives Jim Perkins and Mark Reuss.

What is the most powerful Indy 500 pace car ever?

The 2026 Corvette ZR1X, with 1,250 horsepower from its twin-turbo V8 and front electric motor. It took the record from the 2025 ZR1 (1,064 hp), which had taken it from the 2019 ZR1 (755 hp).

Were there pace car replicas every year?

No. Chevrolet sold replica editions in 1978, 1986 (every convertible), 1995, 1998, 2007 and 2008. The other pace cars were one-off track cars or stock production models with graphics; owners have built their own tributes of the 2004 and 2005 cars.

Has a Corvette paced races other than the Indy 500?

Yes. Corvettes paced the Daytona 500 in 2005 (a coupe), 2006 and 2007 (Z06s), the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999, and the 1984 PPG Indy Car World Series with a one-off 450-hp C4 that now sits, sinkhole-damaged, in the National Corvette Museum.
