One of the most coveted American performance cars ever built, this 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Coupe is scheduled to cross the block at Mecum Auctions’ Monterey Auction on August 15. Already regarded as one of the rarest factory Corvettes in existence, this example stands apart as the only known 1967 L88 finished in Rally Red over a matching Code 305 Red interior, making it a true one-of-one among the mere 20 L88 Corvettes produced for the model year.
The L88 package remains one of Chevrolet’s most legendary engineering achievements. Although officially rated at 430 hp, the 427-cubic-inch V-8 was intentionally underrated by Chevrolet, with real-world output widely acknowledged to exceed its published figure by roughly 25 percent. Built exclusively for serious competition, the engine featured aluminum cylinder heads, a forged rotating assembly, a high-lift camshaft, 12.5:1 compression, and a Holley four-barrel carburetor. Power is delivered through the desirable Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” four-speed manual transmission, a drivetrain combination that helped establish the L88’s reputation on both the street and the drag strip.
The L88 option transformed the Corvette into a race-focused machine. Factory-equipped with metallic brake pads, mandatory power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes, and delivered without luxury equipment such as a radio or heater, it reflected Chevrolet’s uncompromising approach to performance. Its substantial price premium also contributed to its exceptionally low production numbers, further enhancing its exclusivity today.
Beyond its mechanical pedigree, this Corvette boasts one of the strongest provenance records of any L88. It was Bloomington Gold Certified under Ray Norvell’s ownership in 1994 and again in 2014 while part of the Rare Wheels Collection. The car has also appeared in the prestigious Bloomington Gold Special Collection four times and earned numerous NCRS honors, including Regional Top Flight (98.2), National Top Flight (98.4), Regional Performance Verification, and the coveted Duntov Mark of Excellence. Previously housed in the Ray Norvell, Steinman Brothers, and Rare Wheels collections, the Corvette retains its original tank sticker, an increasingly rare piece of factory documentation. According to retired GM executive Tom Hill, the car saw early drag racing duty before undergoing a meticulous restoration, adding another compelling chapter to its history.
