  1. Head designer Bill Mitchell wanted the split. Head engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov hated it. They fought and fought. Finally, head honcho Ed Cole stepped in, decreed the split would be ’63 only,then gone. In doing so, he created a collectible classic.
