The classic second-generation Corvette receives a thoroughly modern performance treatment with this extensively modified 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Coupe, scheduled to cross the block at Mecum’s Dallas/Fort Worth 2026 auction on October 24. Rather than preserving its original mechanical specification, this C2 combines period-inspired styling with contemporary hardware aimed at substantially improving performance, braking, handling and drivability.
At the heart of the build is a 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 paired with a six-speed manual transmission and McLeod Racing hydraulic clutch. The powertrain is complemented by a chassis engineered around modern components, including coilover suspension, C7-sourced suspension arms and C6-specification braking hardware. A Wilwood master cylinder further supports the upgraded braking system, while power steering adds practicality to the high-performance configuration.
The exterior wears a distinctive blue-and-white finish, while the cabin is trimmed in black leather and configured with a decidedly performance-oriented layout. Recaro bucket seats, Tanaka four-point harnesses and a Moto-Lita steering wheel reinforce the car’s motorsport character. An Ididit tilt column and Dakota Digital RTX instruments introduce modern functionality without abandoning the Corvette’s classic aesthetic.
Rolling on staggered 19- and 20-inch Stance wheels, the Corvette’s upgraded suspension and braking systems are matched by a selection of features intended to make the car suitable for more than occasional show duty. Vintage Air provides modern climate control, while the combination of contemporary chassis components and manual transmission gives the car a substantially different dynamic character from its original-era specification.
With its blend of unmistakable C2 styling and later-generation Chevrolet performance technology, this custom Corvette represents a restomod approach focused on mechanical modernization rather than strict originality. Its auction appearance at Mecum Dallas/Fort Worth places a highly modified interpretation of one of Chevrolet’s most recognizable sports cars before collectors seeking classic design with contemporary performance hardware.
