Nearly exactly one year ago, avid enthusiast and Corvette sales professional Rick Conti relived the last Engine Build Experience, a customer of his, before the program was indefinitely paused. Thankfully, the Corvette Engine Build Experience came roaring back in 2026, and CorvSport was there to capture the very first build following its revival. This time, NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, along with his father, stepped into the Performance Build Center to assemble the LT7 that would power Gordon’s ZR1X. The Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

♦ Step 1: Dawn Arrival and Prep

  • 5:45 AM — The Morning Arrival: The day begins in the pitch-black of early morning. Participants meet their National Corvette Museum host at the main entrance of the Bowling Green Assembly Plant.
  • 5:45 AM – 6:00 AM — Breakfast Briefing: Once inside, families are treated to a continental breakfast to fuel up for a physically demanding 6 to 8 hours on their feet.
  • 6:00 AM — Safety Presentation & Gear Up: Participants are briefed on active plant floor safety. They “suit up” by donning safety glasses, protective footwear, and their official, exclusive program gear—including a custom Engine Build polo shirt and a matching model cap. Pre-build family photos are taken here at the station.
  • 6:30 AM — The Builder Pairing: At exactly 6:30 AM, the build officially begins. You are introduced to your dedicated Performance Build Center (PBC) Master Engine Builder. They serve as your personal mentor, supervisor, and “safety net” for the rest of the day.

♦ Step 2: The Stationary “Smart Bench” and Long Block Assembly

The modern C8 engine program features a major logistical change from past generations. During the C7 era, participants followed an engine block as it moved on a wheeled cart from station to station down a progressive line. For the C8 platform, GM transitioned to a Stationary Smart Bench system. Instead of moving through a noisy plant, you and your master builder stay at one single, dedicated build bay, and all parts and specialized tooling are brought directly to you. This creates a quiet, intimate, and highly personal workshop environment perfect for family collaboration.

  • 6:30 AM — Bare Block Digitization: The process begins with a bare, 100-pound structural aluminum engine block. Before lifting a tool, the master builder guides you in scanning the block’s unique tracking barcode into the GM Global Manufacturing System (GMS). This permanently links your specific vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to this exact piece of aluminum.

  • 7:00 AM — Smart Tooling Setup: You are briefed on the station’s networked DC electric torque wrenches. Every tool hanging over your bench is Bluetooth-enabled and linked to GM’s central server. The system pushes the exact sequence and torque specification directly to the tool in your hand. If you miss a bolt or tighten one out of order, the overhead monitor flashes red, and the tool completely shuts off until corrected. This absolute safety net ensures the factory warranty remains fully intact.
  • 7:30 AM — Lower End Assembly: You manually drop the forged steel crankshaft into the block journals, install the bearings, and torque the main cap bolts.
  • 9:00 AM — Piston Installation: Using a specialized piston ring compressor tool, you and your build partner hand-tap the eight pistons directly into the cylinder bores.
  • 10:30 AM — Valvetrain and Timing: You lower the massive dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) cylinder heads onto the block. Under close technician supervision, you set up the complex timing chains and button up the long block core, preparing it for external dress.

♦ Step 3: The Engine Dress Line

Once the internal components of your core long block are sealed, verified, and locked in, your workspace transitions into the Dress Line phase. While your location at the stationary bench remains exactly the same, the master builder cycles your parts trays out for external component arrays. This phase shifts your focus from heavy mechanical torque to complex electrical, fluid, and induction plumbing, making it a highly visual and satisfying stage for a family build.

  • 11:30 AM — Spark Plugs and Ignition Routing: The dress phase begins with the foundational valvetrain finish. You hand-thread and torque all eight specialized spark plugs to exactly 15 ft-lbs using a digital smart wrench. From there, you mount and route the isolated ignition coil packs directly over the valve covers, ensuring clean electrical pathways.
  • 12:00 PM — Auxiliary and Fluid Pump Mounting: You and your build partner shift to the exterior block walls. Together, you mount the heavy auxiliary brackets, the starter motor, and the high-output alternator. The master builder then guides you through seating the precision-machined water and oil pumps, along with their respective gasket lines, ensuring the engine’s lifeblood systems are sealed to factory specifications.
  • 1:00 PM — The Dual-Throttle Intake Drop: This is the most visually defining moment of the build. For the LT6 or LT7, you lift the massive, dual-throttle-body intake manifold assembly and carefully align it over the cylinder head ports. Because the alignment must be mathematically perfect to prevent vacuum leaks, you work in tandem with the builder to systematically lower the unit onto the block and torque the manifold bolts in a strict, center-outward sequence managed by the overhead tracking monitor.
  • 1:45 PM — Exhaust Manifold and Plumbing Finish: The final phase of dress involves the exhaust plumbing. You bolt on the high-flow stainless steel exhaust headers (or the integrated turbocharger plumbing if you are building an LT7/ZR1 powerplant). With the headers secured, you connect the final wiring harnesses, direct fuel lines, and high-pressure oil lines, completing the physical footprint of the engine.

♦ Step 4: Validation Testing

With the physical assembly fully dressed and complete, your engine leaves the stationary build bay. It is wheeled into a specialized, glass-walled testing cell located right inside the Performance Build Center. This phase is entirely about quality assurance and validation. For a family, watching their hand-built engine go through its final paces under high-tech diagnostics provides an intense, cinematic climax to the workday.

  • 2:15 PM — Cold Test Docking: The completed engine is rolled into the test cell and locked into a specialized diagnostic dock. The technician hooks up automated lines for oil, water, and electrical sensors. An electric motor then spins the engine at roughly 1,000 RPM without any fuel or spark. This “Cold Test” measures internal friction, checks oil pressure curves, and uses automated sensors to ensure there are zero fluid leaks or unexpected mechanical resistance.
  • 2:30 PM — The Hot Test and Fuel Fire: Once the cold diagnostics flash green, the engine is hooked up to a natural gas line (used inside the plant for cleaner, safer indoor emissions) or a specialized fuel rig. The engine’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) is flashed with its final production software, certifying that the powerplant has passed every single factory quality control metric and is officially cleared for vehicle installation.

♦ Step 5: The Signature Plaque Ceremony and Final Sign-Off

The ultimate reward of the Corvette Engine Build Experience takes place immediately following the validation test. Now officially certified as a factory-spec powerplant, the engine is rolled back to your station for a formal closing ceremony. This step cements your family’s name into automotive history, transforming a piece of machinery into a permanent family legacy.

  • 3:00 PM — The Plaque Placement: The master builder presents you with your personalized, metal engine build plaque. This plate features the engraved name of your dedicated PBC technician alongside an open space for your signature. Using a specialized etching tool, you engrave your name onto the metal. Together with the builder, you rivet the signed plaque directly onto the top center of the intake manifold, permanently branding the engine as a family creation.
  • 3:15 PM — Media and Keepsake Handout: With the plaque secured, the National Corvette Museum host conducts a final photo session around the completed engine. You are presented with a premium, padded presentation folder containing your official Certificate of Authenticity.   • 3:30 PM — The Line Transfer: In the final moments of the experience, the master builder signs off on the official build book. The engine is then wrapped in protective factory film, loaded onto a secure transport rack, and queued for transfer to the main Bowling Green assembly line.
