From 7-Figure Bids To 4-Digit Bargains, Mecum Monterey Tells The Corvette Story Like No Other Venue Can

CorvSport highlights the most interesting top sales and duds from Monterey, while we continue to track the story behind the story—Mecum’s yearly Corvette inventory decline across every single venue

There is just something special in the August air when Monterey Car Week rolls into the idyllic peninsula on the California coast. Somehow, the salt air, coastal roads, and impossibly beautiful machinery create an atmosphere unlike anything else in the automotive world—and it gets even better when remarkable Corvettes are part of the conversation. What began in 1950 as a modest road race through the Del Monte forest and a small companion car show has evolved into a mandatory 10-day pilgrimage for the world’s elite collectors and enthusiasts. Today, Monterey Car Week seamlessly weaves together the historic grid of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca, the ultra-luxury garden party atmosphere of The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, and the multimillion-dollar bidding wars at premier auction houses like RM Sotheby’s, all culminating in what is arguably the world’s most prestigious automotive crown: the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

From Eight Figures To Four

As we come off the record-breaking $18.7 million sale of a 1963 Corvette Grand Sport at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, we’re reminded that Corvette culture and the hobby itself are not defined by how many zeros sit behind the price tag. Instead, they are defined by the remarkable way America’s Sports Car resonates across generations, income levels, and every imaginable corner of the enthusiast world. Whether your dream is a bargain-priced, four-digit C4 or a special Mid-Year that pushes dangerously close to seven figures, the DNA remains the same. The Corvette has always had an uncanny ability to be both an attainable enthusiast machine and one of the world’s most desirable collector automobiles—and Monterey put that entire spectrum on display.

Something For Everybody On The Peninsula

Yes, Monterey’s famously upscale atmosphere attracted plenty of heavy-hitting classics and multimillion-dollar machinery, but there were bargains hiding among the blue-chip Corvettes as well, and we’ll highlight a couple of those today. That’s part of what makes following these auctions so fascinating. One moment, you’re watching history being made with an $18 million-plus Corvette, and the next, you’re looking at a car that sold for just four digits. From record-setting rarities to attainable machines still capable of putting a smile on an enthusiast’s face, Monterey had something for just about everybody.

The Inventory Story Keeps Getting More Interesting

Now, let’s get back to the declining-inventory narrative that the CorvSport team has been religiously following. One of the most fascinating facets of the Mecum landscape over the past three seasons of extensive CorvSport coverage has been the continued drop in Corvette inventory across every venue. At Mecum’s two largest events—Kissimmee and Indianapolis—overall Corvette inventory has fallen by 27.8% since our coverage began in 2024. That’s a staggering 239 fewer Corvettes crossing the block in just three auction seasons. But as we’ve continued to track the numbers, the plot has only thickened: nine of Mecum’s 12 venues have actually improved their sell-through rates despite offering fewer Corvettes. Mecum Monterey was no exception, posting a sell-through rate 10% higher than in 2024.

Fewer Cars, Better Sell-Through, And Plenty To Discuss

Our team has speculated about multiple reasons for the shift. Competition from online auction giants like Bring a Trailer offers undeniable convenience. Mecum, on the other hand, demands a much bigger commitment from both buyers and sellers. Or perhaps enthusiasts are simply holding on to their babies rather than sending them down the auction lane in hopes of finding something better. Whatever the explanation, the numbers don’t lie, and our extensive Mecum tracker just below tells the story. Then, once we’ve crunched the data, it’s time to have some fun as we dive into Mecum Monterey’s Top 7 Most Interesting Corvette Sales—along with one Corvette that failed to hammer despite attracting a truly startling seven-digit high bid.
