But performance history never stands still. As the modern era arrived, displacement was no longer the only path to extraordinary power, and forced induction began taking center stage. That evolution brings us to the C7 Z06 and its formidable LT4, a supercharged powerhouse that upped the forced-induction ante and carried Chevrolet’s factory-engineered boost program into an entirely new level of performance.
As we established in part one, the LS9-powered C6 ZR1 marked a critical departure from the 1987 Callaway B2K Twin Turbo C4, becoming the first Corvette conceived, engineered, and assembled entirely by General Motors around an in-house forced-induction powerplant. Now, Tracking The Supercharged Legends follows the next major step in that lineage, tracing the C7 Z06’s path across the collector market’s most influential stages, from online heavyweight Bring a Trailer to auction giants Mecum and Barrett-Jackson. Before we dive into the sales results, market movement, and record-setting examples, however, we first need to look back at the machine itself—and the story behind the supercharged LT4 that pushed Chevrolet’s forced-induction Corvette era even further forward.
The Birth of a Supercharged Titan
When Chevrolet set out to design the C7 generation Corvette Z06, Executive Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter and his engineering team were handed an incredibly daunting objective: build a supercar that could equal or surpass the track performance of the previous-generation, top-tier C6 ZR1, but do it within the standard assembly flow of the base Stingray. Engineering The Gen V Powerhouse
To extract an SAE-certified 650 horsepower from a tight 6.2-liter package, GM infused the LT4 with a suite of cutting-edge core technologies. The engine utilized an ultra-precise 2,900 psi Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) system to mist fuel directly into the cylinders, promoting an intense in-chamber cooling effect that supported high-compression efficiency without engine knock. Active Fuel Management balanced fuel economy and cruising refinement by seamlessly deactivating four cylinders during highway transit, while Continuously Variable Valve Timing constantly adjusted the camshaft profile to optimize performance across the entire RPM range. To combat starvation under violent, high-G track cornering, a dedicated dry-sump oil system was integrated to maintain constant lubrication. Furthermore, to survive the extreme mechanical stresses of this high-compression, supercharged environment, GM upgraded the top end with premium Rotocast A356-T6 aluminum cylinder heads. By rotating the mold during the liquid aluminum pour, this process eradicated metallurgical porosity, yielding a dramatically stronger cylinder head than the standard cast units found on the naturally aspirated LT1.
Trial By Fire And The Thermal Fix
Despite its engineering brilliance, the early iteration of the C7 Z06 was not without its problems, notably severe engine overheating issues that occurred mostly on the track under sustained, high-load conditions. Aggressive track driving would trigger high intake air temperatures, forcing the engine’s electronic control unit to pull timing and plunge the vehicle into a protective “limp mode” to prevent catastrophic detonation. To permanently address these thermal management limitations, GM implemented critical cooling upgrades for the 2017 model year by redesigning the supercharger housing. This update introduced a revised cover that accommodated larger, tilted internal intercooler bricks, dramatically improving airflow and dropping combustion temperatures across the rear cylinders.

Beyond the factory assembly line, this engine’s physical blueprint cemented its legacy across the broader automotive world.
