Can the Corvette ZR1X convert a Ferrari collector?

The Gentleman’s Garage joins forces with Shmee to put Chevrolet’s extraordinary Corvette ZR1X through its paces, exploring whether this American performance machine has finally reached a level capable of challenging—and potentially tempting—collectors accustomed to Europe’s most prestigious supercars.

For a collector whose garage is dominated by legendary Italian machinery, the Corvette represents unfamiliar territory. With icons such as the Ferrari LaFerrari, F40, F50, SF90 XX, and Lamborghini’s V12 lineage already part of the equation, the arrival of a Chevrolet would mark a significant departure. Yet the C8-generation Corvette changed perceptions by moving to a mid-engine configuration, establishing a fundamentally different platform for extracting supercar-level performance.

The ZR1X takes that philosophy to an extreme. Its 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 works with a front-mounted electric motor to produce a staggering 1,250 horsepower. Chevrolet’s claimed figures place acceleration from 0 to 60 mph at approximately 1.7 seconds, while the quarter-mile can be dispatched in well under nine seconds. Those numbers put the Corvette squarely into hypercar territory, despite its dramatically different positioning and pricing.

The particular example tested wears Competition Yellow with distinctive red accents, including red brake calipers and contrasting trim inspired by Corvette’s motorsport heritage. Inside, the updated cabin combines multiple digital displays with revised controls and selectable Tour, Sport, and Track modes. Despite its extreme performance hardware, the ZR1X retains surprising everyday usability, offering a comfortable road-going character, respectable visibility, and enough luggage capacity for practical road trips.

The transformation becomes more dramatic on track. Equipped with the ZTK performance package, including aggressive aerodynamics, specialized suspension tuning, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, the Corvette demonstrates remarkable composure under hard acceleration and cornering. Launch control delivers devastating straight-line performance, while its substantial braking hardware provides the stopping power necessary to repeatedly shed speed.
